GR-01: Graphics Displays, Pictures The following MegaDisk sets ($6.99 for each multi-disk set) contain primarily 640x480x256 color GIF files, arranged by category. "Glamour" disks are R-rated (very tasteful). To view the files, you will need a GIF file viewer, such as CompuShow (#1704). Anagly Schreiber Instruments $0 is a 3D graphics display program. It requires EGA-compatible video and common 3D viewing glasses (left eye red, right eye blue. Glasses are available from Schreiber for a low cost.) The 3D image files are simple text files containing x-y-z triplets which you can generate in addition to the demo files. Art is an EGA demo BugFry G. McPhail $0 is the best Computer Full-Employment program we've seen since EGA-Aquarium. For those who find fish-watching too tame, you should love this computer simulation of an electronic bug zapper. It's just the thing to put on your computer when your backyard barbecue gets rained out. Cos-Eye is an EGA demo that requires BASICA 3.2. KC-DEMO draws world map, nude, Captain Kirk, boxes. Mona is an outstanding full-color version of the Mona Lisa. Victor V286 Power Demo (POWER) Knee Toe Productions $0 is a graphics display demo for 286 machines with EGA-compatible video. It has motion, color and sound. Rolex is the ultimate PC-as-a-clock program. On an EGA monitor (sorry, doesn't work with others), it displays a beautiful picture of a Rolex(tm) watch displaying the current time. A second hand sweeps across the face of the watch and the watch's date display tells you the date. Roses is an EGA demo. SGlass Schafts, Debbie and Schafts, George $0 produces a stained glass-like effect on the screen. EGA required. EGADemo is a demo of EGA graphics. EGAKal McClendon, Judson D. $0 is a kalediscope display for the EGA. EGAMagic Raxsoft Development $0 is a demo for EGA monitors that demonstrates the use of dithering to get even more colors and interesting patterns. GodsEye Campbell, George $0 draws a colorful pattern similar to the "god's eye" fabric weaving pattern popular with the 60's hippies as well as with old Latin America. Instant Paradise (INSTPAR) Salgado, J. Raphael B. $10 puts you on the beach of a beautiful tropical island. As you sit at your desk, staring at the computer screen, do you ever daydream about being in a remote tropical paradise? Fire up Instant Paradise and watch the waves come in, the fish jump out of the water, a sailboat maneuvering with a seagull overhead while clouds drift lazily by. As the sun sets and the moon comes out colors change to twilight, nighttime, dawn, and back to daylight. EGA is required. Other nifty demos already in the PsL by the same (16 year old) author are AQUARIUM for the CGA, and AQUAEGA - two great fish tank simulators. Kaledis 3.1 McClendon, Judson D. $0 is an EGA/VGA Kaleidoscope program. `C' source included. LCDclock 1.1 (LCDCLOK) Hartz, George $5 is a beautifully done digital alarm clock for EGA systems. The clock looks just like the one sitting on your night stand. Although the main attraction of the program is its accurate rendition of a real clock, you can load it into a DESQview window on a 386 (graphics programs cannot run in the background in DV on a 286) and use its alarm to wake you up at 5 pm to go home. Mind is the ultimate EGA mindless pattern-drawing demo. Polygon 1.0 Dukarich, Gary $0 will display a triangle, quadrangle, pentagon, and hexagon in 3-D motion. For EGA and VGA only. Rax Raxsoft Development $? is a demo of dithering and 3-D rotation for an EGA. Most impressive on a very fast CPU machine. Splat is a cute little EGA demo that gives the appearance of different color paint drops falling onto and running down the monitor. Clever and colorful. TeaPot Berkes, Otto $? is a 3-D image rotation demo for the EGA. Although a teapot seems like an odd image to use (most people use cubes or such), it does make the demo more interesting than the usual run of the mill. -------------------------------- END OF SMALL PROGRAMS DISK #0765 -------------------------------- ---------------------------- #27038/1512 EGA/VGA Graphics Small Programs disk ---------------------------- FishBee VGA Graphics $0 is a great animated graphics display. We don't want to say too much that would spoil the suprises, but the main characters are a goldfish and a bee and anyone with a color VGA monitor is going to love this. Incidentally, the little music file that comes with it has the best music sounds we have ever heard on a PC's speaker. Grafix Bill Voss $0 is a graphics demo for VGA/MCGA only. This is among the best VGA demos ever. If you have a VGA, you will want to see this. O-My-God! is an outstanding kaleidoscope program for VGA systems - one of the top 2. Plasma Mulvey, Bret $0 is a VGA graphics demo. Pascal source code included. Pyro 2.03 Shields, K. G $0 produces a wide variety of impressive fireworks displays. The program also has sound effects. CGA, mono-graphics and even text-only displays are supported, in addition to EGA/VGA. C source code is included. VGAart (VGA-ART) Saucier, Matt $0 is a VGA graphics display demo. VGA Interludes (VGAI) Pop Software $12 is an interesting graphic display for VGA monitors unlike the usual kaleidoscope type displays. EGA/VGA required. America Wilson, Thomas R. $0 is a fireworks display. Firework 2.0 (FIRWRKS) will display a realistic looking fireworks show on an EGA monitor. KAMSave 1.0 Marshall, Keith A. $10 is a a colorful screen display for VGA. You can start it up before leaving your PC to use it as a screen-saver. Nature 1.0 Micro Madness Software $10 is an animated display of a nature scene. It features a waterfall and stream with randomly flying birds and butterflies, jumping frogs, and fish jumping. VGA is required. (Not on this disk. Ask for disk #18006.) Ooze Bulvey, Bret & Clough, Jeff $0 is a hypnotic, pulsing graphic display. Ooze is a rewrite (C source code included) and enhancement of a program called Plasma. Requires VGA. (Not on this disk. Ask for disk #18057.) Rainbow-Land 4.01 (RAINBO) [10/93 CD] Latimer, Joey $15 is a 16-color, 320x200 EGA/VGA graphics program for creating interactive animated art. Features include built-in help screens, user defined colors and shapes, and more. VGA Lines (VLINES) Dolan, Bob $0 is an interesting VGA demo. Instead of just a single line bouncing around the screen, like you've seen many times before, this one lets you set up to 10 different lines in motion. -------------------------------- END OF SMALL PROGRAMS DISK #2766 -------------------------------- ---------------------- #1949 Graphic Displays Small Programs Disk ---------------------- Dali DGT Consulting, Inc. $0 is a computerized version of Salvador Dali's Persistence of Memory, but with clocks that actually work. Nice concept - but you have to sit through an annoying start-up screen. Requires EGA/VGA. Garfy Griggs, Bob $0 is the old EGA Rolex watch face (in very nice, hi-res color), but this time with Garfield the Cat on it asking "Where's the Lasagna?" GR3 $0 displays a colorful, animated 3-D object (electric fan, egg beaters, clocks) and rotates it at random angles and speeds. Makes a good (non-automatic) screen blanker or computer show display. Spirals displays a colorful variety of spirals and shapes for EGA/CGA monitors. Star Program (STARS) (09-93 CD) Data Management $10 is a graphic display program similar to Windows' star field screen saver. (Not on this disk. Ask for disk #18125.) StarFlag (STARFLG) De Palma, John Richard $0 displays the American flag and plays the Star Spangled Banner. QB source code is included. If you have DOS 5, you can load the source code in QBasic and see how the program works. Wator is a sort of like the "Game of Life" taken to the ocean. Fish (the prey) and sharks (the predators) swim, hunt for food, and breed. It is based on an idea published in Scientific American (Computer Recreations, A.K. Dewdney, Sept. 1983). The user sets the parameters such as life and breeding years and the program carries out the simulation. -------------------------------- END OF SMALL PROGRAMS DISK #1949 -------------------------------- ------------------------- #3402 EGA/VGA Graphics #3 Small Programs Disk ------------------------- Cycle Balash, Marty $0 is an unusual, very interesting graphics display. Here's an oddity: the program runs much faster on a 286 than it does on a 386. Requires EGA/VGA. Halloween Skull (HALSKUL) $0 is an animated Halloween skull with scary music. VGA required. Inkblot Johnson, Mark S. $5 is an unusual VGA graphics display. It mirrors random lines in four sectors, creating a colorful and almost fractal-like inkblot display. Snow 2.0 Hill, Allan W. $0 displays an animated scene of an iceskater gliding around a frozen pond out in the country. You can control the amount of snowfall and toggle on/off the Christmas lights on the house in the background. VGA is required. (Not on this disk. Ask for disk #8799.) SweetDos (SWETDOS) LeVitt, Dick $0 displays an old-fashioned wall clock with swinging pendulum. Framed needlepoint next to the clock proclaims "DOS sweet DOS". The system time is displayed on the clock. VGA and 286/386 required. -------------------------------- END OF SMALL PROGRAMS DISK #3402 -------------------------------- ---------------------- #2847 Graphic Displays Small Programs Disk ---------------------- Ansi Shoppe (ANSISHP) Third Stage Software Development Corp. $3-$8 of 24 colorful "graphics" screens done with ASCII characters. Requires ANSI.SYS in your CONFIG.SYS file (see your DOS manual). Color graphics are not required, but will add a lot to the drawings. AnsiTrek (ANS-TRK) Gamboa, Noel $0 is a collection of color ANSI graphics drawings of Star Trek related subjects. Considering the limitations of ASCII graphics, this set is very well done. Chaos3 Grandine, Joseph D. $0 will create a pattern from a series of randomly selected points, as described on NOVA last August 1. Requires VGA, but the QB source code is included and can be modified for other video types. Demon 2.0 Katzung, Bert $0 is a cellular automaton, similar to Life. It displays a graphic grid of cells that change state with each "life cycle". As described in the August issue of Scientific American, the automaton starts out in a completely random state and gradually takes on a greater and greater degree of organization. Requires EGA or VGA. C source code is included. Demon 1.1A (DEMONJM) McCranie, Judson ASP $5 is a graphics display that simulates a cellular, crystal-like growth. Earth Sokol, John L. $0 displays a globe spinning and moving around the screen. Because the image keeps moving, you could leave this running on a computer when you are gone to prevent burn-in. Flag $0 displays an American flag on the screen. (What the heck, it's only 850 bytes, and you can wave your computer during parades.) Starz 1.0 Dolan, Bob $0 displays a head-on view of oncoming stars in the classic Star Trek tradition. Sometimes the spacecraft will go into a spin or dart from one side to the other. Sometimes the speed will change, and other times colorful stars will appear. Nice for use as a screen blanker while away from your desk. VGA Art (VGAART) (08-93 CD) Moraffware International $0 is an incredible graphics demonstration. It supports virtually any kind of video from monochrome to 256-color Super Hi-Res VGA. Many of these displays defy description and simply must be seen. -------------------------------- END OF SMALL PROGRAMS DISK #2847 -------------------------------- ---------------------- #1911 Fractal Graphics Small Programs Disk ---------------------- 3D-Brot Schore, Michael $0 is a set of GIF files picturing 3-D mandelbrot sets. These can be viewed with any GIF file viewer, such as VPIC. It is, of course, more spectacular in full color on an EGA or VGA. Dragon Mulvey, Bret $0 calculates and displays a class of mathematical curves known as Julia sets, named after Gaston Julia. Gaston Julia and Pierre Fatou studied the properties of these curves in depth during the first world war, but without modern computer graphics it was almost impossible to imagine what the curves actually look like. The details of a Julia curve are infinitely small and no computer can give an exact representation of one, but DRAGON will display a Julia curve to the best of its abilities. CGA, EGA, VGA, Herc are supported. Fly-MW Moraffware $0 is a scrolling fractal landscape that provides the illusion of looking down at the earth through an aircraft window. A version with a jet flying through the air is provided. VGA is required. Fractal Master (FRACMAS) Carlson, Paul W. $15-$20 is a menu-driven program that allows you to create, save, and modify several different types of fractals. It includes the Mandelbrot Set, Julia Sets, Dragonland, and self-squared dragons. Both integer and floating point calculations can be used. Maps can be saved to disk and colors edited. It also includes animation and mirror images. EGA required. Fractal Kaleidoscope 2N (FRACTKL) Thomas, Arthur L. $15 will help you design and display slowly-changing pictures on your computer screen using Fractal Graphics. Requires an EGA card and monitor. An 80*87 version is included. Frak Graham, Keith P. $0 Fraktal experiments with interesting bugs. Fast. MandelBrot Picture Generator (MANDVGA) Rodriguez, Jose L. $0 draws 256-color fractal graphics on a VGA/MCGA. Source code in C and Fortran is included. The math coprocessor is supported, but not required. -------------------------------- END OF SMALL PROGRAMS DISK #1911 -------------------------------- ------------------------- #2994 Fractal Graphics #2 Small Programs Disk ------------------------- 3dfrac 3.0 Contorer, Aaron $? This is a different kind of fractal-graphics program. It uses three-dimensional fractal geometry to generate simulated landscapes from a perspective you would see from an airplane. EGA/VGA required. C source code is included. Biomorph 1.01 (BIOMRPH) Seidel, David A. $0 generates fractal biomorphs by reiterating the function f(Z) = Z^3 + C, where Z and C are both complex numbers. Requires EGA compatible video. C source code is included. Frac Ratcliff, John $0 is a fractal rendering program. The FRAC program uses a unique algorithm to speed up the mandelbrot computation. Fractal Landscapes 2.0 (FRACLND) Chao, Dennis $10 creates beautiful random fractal landscapes in 3D. You can change color palettes, the viewing angle, and more. EGA/VGA is required. The program sometimes aborted with an error message while drawing in our testing, but ran all right most of the time. FractalWeave 2.0 (FWEAVE) Price, James H. $15 generates a unique variety of colorful and detailed screen images with Fractal graphics. Unlike most fractal generating programs, it combines fairly rapid image generation with an animated display. It also has the capability to save full screen images in standard PCX format. EGA/VGA is required. IFS Trees (IFSTREE) MorganSoft $0 draws trees of different sizes on screen using fractal graphics. VGA required. Kaotix 2.3 BSX International $5 is a Chaotic fractal generator. You simply pick up to 15 points on the screen, and a beautiful undulating picture is created. EGA and a mouse are required. LandForm 1.0 (LANDFRM) Smith, Glenn K. $0 is a fractal program for VGA that generates two views of a piece of land. It starts with a top view then rotates the map to a side view that shows depth and height of the landscape, plus moving waters and a dark sky with stars. Also included are two self-running demos that display the images with motion in the water. Mand88/Mand386 2.3 (MAND) Christman, John $15 is a Mandelbrot microscope. The "microscope" means that you can magnify selected parts of the screen. Since fractals are, by definition, extremely irregular lines made up of an infinite number of similarly irregular lines, you can "zoom in" forever. Requires CGA, EGA or VGA compatible video and at least 512k of RAM. The 386 version is extremely fast, even without a math coprocessor. A mouse is supported for moving the pointer and an HPLJ is supported for printouts. -------------------------------- END OF SMALL PROGRAMS DISK #2994 -------------------------------- ---------------------- #0110 Drawing Programs Small Programs Disk ---------------------- 4-Dplus Daniels, Brad $? is available in 2 versions: 4-dplus.com and 4-d87.com. 4-d87.com is a version of 4-dplus which has 8087 coprocessor support. Allows you to draw object at different angles and if you have a 640K machine you can animate images. House.BAS Ford, Nelson ASP $0 is a simple program for drawing floor plans which are then printed via a graphics screen dump. It lets you measure distances on screen, draw and erase lines. BASIC source code can be easily modified. Required are BASIC, a CGA-compatible video card, and a printer with graphics screen dump software (such as DOS's GRAPHICS.COM). PDraw Morrill, David $? is an excellent program to demonstrate the color graphics capability of the IBM PC. It was written entirely in the IBM DOS Advanced BASIC (BASICA) and uses the 320 by 200 pixel color graphics mode. Provides an easy way to set colors, draw or sketch points, lines, boxes, and circles, paint figures, and load or save screen pictures. Scenic Artist 1.0 (SCNART) Gulick, Charles $10 lets you create beautiful landscapes. You start with a barren expanse of sky and ground. You can add lakes, mountain ranges, trees, moon reflections on water, clouds, and so on. There are lots of options available, and even the most un-artistic person can create a breath-taking panorama with ease. Created by the author of Flight Simulator. #0110 ASCII Graphics -------------------- Doodle Reiser, Steve $? lets you doodle on the screen in ASCII graphics. The result can be saved either in straight ASCII or in Word Perfect format for printing by that popular word processing program. (PD) July4.ANS is a clever display done completely with ASCII characters. (You must have ANSI.SYS in your CONFIG.SYS file.) All you have to do is TYPE the file and watch the color and action. That is, at the DOS prompt, enter TYPE JULY4.ANS and press Enter. Pin-Art is a text file that contain drawings done solely with ASCII characters whose ASCII values are 32 or above. The drawings were designed for use primarily by bbs's, and only ASCII values of 32+ can be reliable transmitted over the phone and reproduced on the receiving computer's monitor. Even non-sysops might find the drawings useful and the accompanying text, entertaining. Sketch Boyarko, Brian $0 is a drawing program that uses the text mode and all ASCII characters. The author wrote the program for displaying process systems, such as sewage treatment. Different colors can be used to indicate changes in temperature during the process, etc. -------------------------------- END OF SMALL PROGRAMS DISK #0110 -------------------------------- -------------------- #0866 Graphics Demos Small Programs Disk -------------------- 1Soft is presented for old times sake. It was winner of the now defunt Softalk magazine's "One-Liner" BASIC programming contest. Load BASICA and run it. 3D-Maze Dean, James L. $0 will create and display a 3D maze on the screen. The maze could be printed with a graphics screen dump and solved, but it seems to be intended more as an interesting graphics display. Pascal source code is included. 3DWave 1.1 Contorer, Aaron $0 displays a moving 3D waveform. An interesting effect. CasIoz Noeldner, Paul $? is a clever variation of those wonderful programs that turn your multi- thousand dollar computer system into a $9.95 watch. Visually, there is no comparison between this one and the stunning ROLEX.COM for EGA monitors (on 1-GR-765). It has the ability to display the "watch" in mirror image and will also display the time in Hexadecimal or Roman numerals and will let you set an alarm or play a tune. Clock (CLOCKWW) Wild West Software $0 displays a large clock on the screen (complete with second hand) and the times for Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo and London. Fantasy 2.0 (FANT-NS) Natural Software ASP $20 creates flowing graphic images on your display as you move your mouse. You can record the patterns you generate and store them in a disk file for later playback. Two demo files are included and they are very fascinating. We could not exit the demo on an AST with a VGA, but it worked all right on an Epson Equity II with CGA. The demo should be run from a hard disk or RAM disk as the frequent disk accessing spoils the demo when run from a slow floppy. Globe is a simple demo in BASIC. It shows a planet spinning in a field of stars. Maxhead2 is about as good an attempt as you are going to get on a PC to recreate Max Headroom, complete with stammering speech. If your machine is faster than a stock 8088 PC, you will need to slow it down to have any chance of understanding the speaking. Piston is a graphic display of how a piston engine works. It looks jerky at first (while the component images are being drawn) but runs smoothly after it has been running a while, just like a real car. Shuttle is a graphics demo that uses the PRESENT program (on the disk) to display a 3-D image of the space shuttle rotating in space. Sine 2.0 Synergy Development and Stewart, David Thomas $10-$15 is an excellent graphics pattern demo program. A whirling, puslating, quickly changing pattern of dots. Just the thing for insomniacs. Slinky Jarvis, John $? creates a graphics show by drawing closed Bezier curves in sequence. The controlling hull points are moved around using various randomizing strategies. -------------------------------- END OF SMALL PROGRAMS DISK #0866 -------------------------------- ----------------------- #1998 Graphics Demos #2 Small Programs Disk ----------------------- 3DHouse Carr, Charles $0 is a 3D model of the inside and outside of a house which you can move around and through as if actually there. Smoothly scrolling graphics with create a virtual reality that is fun to play with. 3DimRot allows you to rotate three dimensional figures on X,Y or Z axes. Call or edit figures from disk or create new figures by entering point coordinates and connections. Save figure data or screen on disk. 3Danimat (3DANIMA) Loomis, Jack M. and Eby, David W. $6 is a high-speed 3-D animation program. Like other similar programs, you have to wait while the 3-D animation frames are drawn, but it only takes a minute or two and then the display is impressive. CGA compatibility required. BFly Rush, William A. $5 draws a full-screen, multi-color butterfly (slowly). No two are ever the same. Optionally prints in color on an Epson EX-800/1000 printer with a color option. Coffee gives your computer a coffee break when you take one. A smiling pot of coffee and two smiling cups give off steam and change expressions while the `percolator' tune plays. Then with your bloodstream revitalized, the program gets you charging with a rousing rendition of the William Tell Overture. BASICA and graphics required. EinsTime (EINSTIM) draws a picture of Einstein, adds a clever saying, and displays the time of day. Eye Siegel, Bob $? puts a big eye on the screen. The eye moves slowly back and forth. Saturn.BAS displays the planet Saturn. BASICA required. Tripled Smedstad, Gus $? is a graphics demo program which displays five objects: a cylinder, a hemisphere, a pyramid, a house, and a plane. You can move and rotate any of them, or the viewpoint, and remove the hidden edges at any time or move them closer or farther away. WorldMap (WORLDMA) draws a map of the world. -------------------------------- END OF SMALL PROGRAMS DISK #1998 -------------------------------- ------------------------ #2680 Graphics Utilities Small Programs Disk ------------------------ ANS2COM 3.0 Rexxcom $15 converts ANSI graphics to self-displaying COM files. CGAPCX 1.0 Visionary Software Technology, Inc. $10 allows you to view up to 256-color PCX files on computers equipped with a CGA adapter. (The authors can no longer be reached at the address provided in the documentation.) CGIF 1.0 Pop Software $0 is a fast, simple utility for viewing GIF files. Pictures are displayed in the VGA 320x200x256 mode. For pictures with resolution higher than 320x200, you can scroll the display. Source code is available from the author. ChkPic Graham, Keith P. is a PC graphics file identifier which is capable of determining 11 different types of graphics files. This can be very helpful if you have gotten a graphics file from somewhere and don't know what kind it is. EZ-Show 1.2b RSE, Inc. $40 lets you create video presentations and slide shows without scripts. It works with anything your screen can display, including text screens and super-VGA graphics. A screen capture program, presentation creation program, and show program are included. Features include fades, delays, user flow control, branching, background processing, EGA palette editor and more. Mouse support is included. Requires CGA, EGA, VGA, or MCGA. FMAC Graham, Keith P. $0 is a CGA MACPAINT file viewer. Better than READMAC. GIF2PCX 1.3 Voit, Robert $10 converts GIF files to PCX files. It can handle large, complex pictures and has a menu system for getting file names. Works with Windows 3.0. Supports VGA only. GIFPrt 4.1 Hamrick, Edward B. $35 will display and print GIF files. It uses color dithering for displaying GIF files on displays and printers that do not support 256 colors; however, as with all other graphics utilities, dithered photographs don't turn out very well. A slide show feature is included. Supports most printers and graphic adapters. Requires 512K. GR_EXT Graham, Keith P. $0 is a text file of many of the known DOS extensions of graphics files. PopPCX 1.0 Panda Studio Inc. $25-$35 is a pop-up PCX file viewer. It takes a rather hefty 86k of RAM. When you pop it up, it lists all the files in the directory rather than just PCX files, making it a little more of a nuisance to use. Also included is a sample drawing showing all of the symbols in this file. MAC2Prn Weeks, Gregory D. $5 prints MacPaint pictures at 72 dpi on Epson or Star printers. MicroCAD 2.0 (MICROCA) Allaway, David R. $35 is a sophisticated, but easy to use drawing program. It is completely icon driven (no menus). Each icon's function is displayed at the top of the screen as the cursor passes over it. Microcad has fast object drawing speeds, with real-time pan, zoom, and 3D object rotations. It also includes perspective, orthographic, simultaneous views, pattern fills, text, colors and more. Other features include automatic export in DXF format, both 3-D and 2-D exports, up to 1500 objects per diagram, auto-dimensioning, OS/2 support, landscape mode printer options, and much more. VGA and mouse required. ORGChart (ORGCHRT) Lee, Jerming $20 creates an organization chart with boxes and lines from a file containing the organization, saves it to a file, and optionally prints it. The input file is very easy to create with any editor or word processor that can save in straight text. The levels of the organization are indicated by the number of spaces indented. Being able to split long lines with commas was one smart option for holding down the width, another is the ability to list the final level of names vertically instead of having to spread them out horizontally. The images can be infinitely complex, and the program supports more than 65000 iterations. Other features include previews of new drawings, potential calculating, integer math options, estimated finish time calculation, sectional view, and much more. Dazzle 5.0j MicroTronics ASP $15 #3927 is an incredible screen blanking/kaleidoscope program. The beautiful use of colors is enhanced even further by the use of fading in and out. It uses split-screen and panning as part of the fade process. Screens can be frozen for shooting photographs or image capturing. EGA/VGA required. Eye-Gard Focus Research $22 #3928 is for leaving messages on and securing your computer while you are away. It will display a selected PCX file. If someone presses a key, the picture and message change and an alarm is sounded. Different pictures, messages, and alarms can be pre-set for different times of the day. Instead of alarms, other programs or batch files can be set to run when a key is pressed. F16 Animation Player Demo Rainbow Technology Group of America $? #20152 plays 32,768/65,535 color animations in real time. This demo includes two examples created in 3D Studio. Requires a video card with a VESA driver, and a minimum 16 MB RAM. (Available on 3.5" 1.44MB MegaDisk only.) Fractal Aggregation Techniques Fractal Recreations $29 #3237 generates fractal shapes from probability distributions and random walks. Beautiful shapes can be created which resemble coral, bushes, trees, sand dunes and mountains. An unusual features is an option to drop pixels like snowflakes which cling to the pixels below. You can import a PCX file or draw an image for this mode as well. Another option allows pixels to move in from ever-widening circles in search of pixels in the center. There are many special effects available. These creations are fascinating to watch, and this is a very well done package. Requires more than 360k disk space. You can choose between properties (scaling, rotation, fixed point), add color and generate an endless variety of new fractals. The program uses a new, powerful drawing tool called a "fractal template", to create complex shapes with rich detail, and assemble these shapes into colorful images. You'll also learn through hands-on exploration about fractal geometry and "chaos" theory. PCX format images from other programs may be imported. It provides SuperVGA support up to 800x600 resolution, and DXF file output for compatibility with CAD and vector drawing programs. EMS and virtual memory support is included for fast high-resolution screen updates. This is a fascinating program exhibiting a unique marriage of art and mathematics, but requires no knowledge of either. It is intuitive and very easy to operate. Fractint 18.0 Tyler, Bert and Wegner, Tim $0 #27039 (08-93 CD) generates Mandelbrot and Julia set fractal images with code written specifically for 386's. (It will also work on a 8088 or 268 machine.) With superVGA's, Fractint can rotate the colors in the palette and randomly add colors giving a kind of pseudo animation that has to be seen to be believed. Features include on-line help with over 350 available screens, a demo mode, support for PaintJet printers, support for XGA video adapter, and support for Targa+ video adapter. This is one of the premier factal graphics programs and has a huge array of options, features, and support for various video boards and resolutions. Mandelbrot Magic Left Coast Software $15 #27039/1780 generates color displays of the Mandelbrot Set and Julia Sets, a famous group of mathematical structures known as fractals. Mandelbrot Microscope #27039/772 is a graphics program for mathematicians. Frankly, we mere mortals have found this graphic display of mathematical formulae to be something of a yawner, but it seems to be highly popular with the pocket calculator crowd. So just to show that we are an equal opportunity library, here it is. ... You know, when you run the demo that zooms in with a greater and greater magnification, it IS kinda interesting how... Nah, what am I saying? Give me back my pinball game. Recursive Realm Jones, Scott ASP $20 #2284 is a fractal generation system. Features include expanded memory support, virtual screens, escape sequence tracking, expanded help system, two Julia set functions, four Newton's method functions, direct graphics mode selection from data-entry menu, key changes, speed improvements, Julia set zooming, warped mandelbrots, and the ability to save in PCX EGA/VGA. A math coprocessor is supported. Other features include 3-D projection; sphere projection; convolution to finds edges and lines in an image by recoloring each picture with a color that is a function of the color of the pixel's neighbors; jigsaw puzzles; rapid expansion; variable escape radius; mouse support; and a new Newton's method function and one new magnetism function to show the universality of Mandelbrot set. Requires a hard disk. GrandTour Callahan, John D. $12 #2841 simulates space as seen from the Voyager and Giotto spacecraft. It also generates scenes from arbitrary points in space or the Earth, with the spacecraft visible to the observer. The planet, moons, and rings of interest (or comet, nucleus, and tail), stars, the sun, and the spacecraft are all accurately drawn with wireframe representations. Hidden line removal is done for the body surfaces. For color EGA devices, stars are color coded according to spectral type. Requires 512K and CGA, EGA, or Hercules graphics. Gulf Data Assist, Inc. $0 #3101 is a tribute to our troops in the Persian Gulf. It supports Ad Lib and Sound Blaster, if present, and requires VGA or MCGA for the full-color photos that are displayed. Hallucinations Polymath Systems $10 #1431 is a graphics display that allows you to choose nine speed settings, palette or foreground color, and background color can be selected for each routine from the Options menu. JKFaces 1.5 King, Jerry $0 #3449 is a non-TSR screen saver. It displays photo-quality color pictures of pretty faces with various special effects. Requires EGA/VGA. Kaled Lively, Lynn $? #686 is one of the most interesting pattern-drawing, kaleidoscope program we've seen. The program will allow you to create, edit, run and save your drawings. Morphing MegaDisk #20189 Morphing is a hot graphics technique in movies, commercials, and music videos. Now you can try it on your computer. With true morphing, one entity appears to physically transform into another, as opposed to one image fading in while the other fades out. However, the morphing programs in this set do, in fact, work by fading one image out while the other fades in, so the quality of the morph depends on your choice of beginning and ending images. RMORF (Richard Goedeken, $25) and DMORF (David K. Mason, $35) are two morphing programs that support different graphics formats, but which work about the same. The PC does not support fading in one image while another fades out, so these morphing programs create intermediate graphics files which gradually merge the second picture into the first until all you see is the second picture. You can specify the number of intermediate files to be created. The higher the number, the smoother and more gradual is the resulting morph. DMORF and RMORF do not display the resulting graphics files, which both programs save in TGA format. The only way we found to view them was to use a program by the name of DTA to convert them to an Autodesk Animator .FLI format and use an FLI viewing utility. (Both DTA and SHOW-FLI are included.) DMORF requires a math chip and a fast CPU. If you have a 486, both requirements are automatically met. You also need VGA and several megs of hard disk space for the resulting files. Mset Hayden, David M. $15 #2283 creates, stores, and displays images of the Mandelbrot Set. Features include 80x87 support, CGA, EGA, Hercules, VGA, AT&T 400, PC 3270, and IBM 8451 graphics support, image compression, zooming, fast sketching, color and black & white images, control of the color palette, menus, and on-line help. One of the program's most interesting features is it's ability to quickly sketch an image. Sketches show the basic features of an image and help you decide whether to create a detailed rendering. It compiles an animation control language and creates files to cause ray tracing programs like POV-Ray or Polyray to produce a sequence of frames for an animation. The language offers full arithmetic expressions, looping control and spline path generation. You can create animations with accelerations and/or object interactions. Show-Talk Creative Software Sounds Inc. $15 #3826 is intended to attract people to the computer. It draws fancy collages and about every 30 seconds it says a catch phrase in human speech. It can be used at your show booth, retail store or to play jokes on friends. When the person presses a key, it will say a joke, sing a song or play name that tune. Requires 512K. SnappyScreen Limbo Graphics $11-26 #3238 is a series of VGA graphics displays that can be used as a screen blanker while you are away from your machine. You can select specific graphics such as "Out To Lunch" or "In a Meeting" or allow the program to randomly change the display. VGA required. Files unarchive to over 500k, so an appropriately sized disk is required. Sierra On-Line Xmas Card Sierra $0 #2056 This is the 1989 version of the annual Sierra On-Line Christmas sound and graphics demo. The graphics are just incredible - better than last year, and they were excellent then. Scenes from previous years have been improved and new screens added. The music can be played on your PC's speaker, but it is so plain sounding that you will get bored just sitting there waiting for it to end and go on to the next scene. On the Adlib card, the music becomes as entertaining as the graphics, so the wait for each scene to change isn't as bad. (This demo is probably aimed more at store displays than at someone sitting at their computer and staring at the screen.) The program also supports the IBM Music Feature Card, the PCjr and Tandy 1000 built-in sound systems, and the Roland MT-32 Sound Module. (Run INSTALL if you have one of these.) Requires 340K. It can be used as a screen blanker or as a graphics show. You can modify existing figures or create your own. Valentine Card Kopchak, Randall $0 #4095 is an electronic Valentine card that you can customize. This arrived too late for this year, but it is so unique that you will want to save it for next year. One interesting feature is that if you have a CD-ROM drive connected to your PC, it will play a specified track of a music CD (of your choice) while it displays the graphics show. Visual Note Magic Software + $20-$29 #3929 displays VGA pictures with a note while you are away and lets people enter messages. Several pictures are included.
